Captain & Boat
Captain
I'm Captain Russ Wilkinson.
My homeport is St. Michaels, MD, but much of the year you will find me
in Cape Charles, VA. I am an experienced
captain and fisherman. I have a Coast Guard captains
license for taking up to six guests aboard a vessel in both
inland and near coastal (Ocean or Sound). In addition
I am Licensed with the Maryland Department of Natural
Resources as a fishing guide. I am also a certified
captain with the International Game Fish Association.
I am a Life member of Trout Unlimited, CCA (Coastal
Conservation Association), and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Tackle
All fly fishing tackle furnished
is ORVIS and top of the line, recently added are Helios rods. Cast
easier and farther than you ever have! These super rods are coupled with Mirage large arbor
reels with disc drags to stop a truck. All tackle, flies,
leaders are provided. The tackle includes reels for right hand retrieve and left-hand retrieve
anglers. A variety of fly lines are provided for the conditions and species of fish. For the
light tackle enthusiast, I furnish top of the line Shimano or Van Staaal reels on a variety of
rods.
Fly Fishing Boats
My primary boat is an Everglades 243CC. This nearly custom boat provides
a dry, safe ride. To make it nicer during those early morning runs I added a 3/4 canvas enclosure. See the pictures in
boat gallery!
Fly-fishing from the forward deck is a pleasure with no objects to catch your line on. Fishing
for two or more anglers is comfortable. With the fishing friendly layout and plenty of storage
this boat is designed to give the angler the best advantage over the fish being pursued. The
Everglades easily handles the typical weather we have on the Bay. The boat is powered by YAMAHA.
My second boat takes me back to my roots of Fly Fishing and is a 16' Dolphin Super Skiff. A fast shallow running boat with fly fishing
friendly layout I take this into all my favorite shallow water areas and onto the Bay in calm conditions. Quiet running with an electric
trolling motor allows for some nice shore-line fishing that isn't easily done with the big boats. This is a great boat for the pursuit of
fish in the Barrier Islands of VA and NC.
Electronics
This boat is equipped with state of the art Furuno GPS
(Global Positioning System), Chart plotting, Sonar, and Radar. No matter what the visibility you
can be assured with these electronics that the depth under the boat, location of all objects on the
water and nearest land are easily identified and navigable. An additional feature of the radar
includes tracking capability of flocks of birds over fish. I can find birds miles away long before
other guides can even hope to find them.
Boat ramp locations
Based on fishing
locations, the guest may be need to meet at a location
other than the town of Saint Michaels. Directions will be provided.
Ground transportation can be provided. The best value
for the guest(s) is always to meet the boat at this
location. Locations for local, mid bay angling will usually be
St. Michaels, Claiborne, Bellevue, or Neavitt. Other locations
may be selected that are farther away. These locations
will be coordinated in advance with the guest(s). [top]
